Prayer Before an MRI Scan

For anyone lying still in a loud, narrow MRI machine and fighting the urge to panic.

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)

Father, I am about to lie still inside a machine that is loud and small, and I feel my chest getting tight. Breathe calm into me. When the noise starts, let it remind me that You are near, and when the space feels close, help me close my eyes and picture Your wide open love around me.

Keep my body still and my mind quiet. Help the technicians get clear pictures the first time so I do not need to repeat it. Give the doctors who read these images wisdom and care.

I do not know what the scan will show, but I know who holds me. You have promised to strengthen me and help me and uphold me with Your right hand. I lean on that promise now, one breath at a time.

When it is over, walk me out of that room in peace and keep me from spiraling while I wait for the results. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Short prayer to remember

Fear not, for You are with me. Uphold me, Lord, for the next few minutes. Amen.

Questions about this prayer

What can I pray if I feel claustrophobic in the MRI?

Repeat one short line slowly with your breath, like: You are with me, I will not fear. Many people find that counting breaths with a verse helps.

Should I tell the technician I am anxious?

Yes. They can talk to you through the scan, give you a call button, and sometimes offer a blanket, music or an eye cover.
