Prayer for Panic Attacks at Night

For the 2 a.m. moments when your heart races, your breath gets short and fear takes over.

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”

Psalm 4:8 (KJV)

Lord, it is the middle of the night and my heart is pounding. My chest is tight and my thoughts are racing. I feel like something terrible is happening, even though I am safe in my bed.

Come close to me right now. Slow my heartbeat. Help me breathe in for four counts and out for six, and with each breath let me feel You near.

Remind me that this feeling will pass. Panic is loud, but it is not the truth. You are the truth, and You are here.

I will lay me down in peace and sleep, for You alone make me dwell in safety. Let that become real in my body tonight. Wrap me in Your peace like a heavy blanket.

Help me rest again. And tomorrow, lead me to the help I need, whether that is a doctor, a counselor or a friend. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Short prayer to remember

I will lie down in peace, for You make me safe. Breathe with me, Lord. Amen.
