Prayer for Someone With Dementia

For a parent, spouse or friend whose memory is slipping away, and for the people who love them.

“And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.”

Isaiah 46:4 (KJV)

Father, my loved one is changing. Some days they know me and some days they do not. Some days they are peaceful and other days they are confused and frightened. It breaks my heart.

Please be close to them in a way that does not depend on memory. When they forget names and places, let them never lose the sense of being loved. Calm their fears, give them good sleep, and protect them from falls and harm.

Give wisdom to their doctors and caregivers. Help us make good decisions about their care, and give us patience when we repeat the same answers again and again.

You promised that even to old age and gray hair You will carry us. Carry them now, Lord, and carry us too.

Help me grieve the parts of them I have already lost while still enjoying the moments we have. Let our time together be gentle and kind. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Short prayer to remember

Even to old age, You carry us. Carry them today, Lord. Amen.
